EVERETT, Wash. — Mukilteo School District is considering a policy that would allow administrators to check student cell phones if they suspect a problem such as bullying. The America Civil Liberties Union of Washington called a similar policy, proposed last summer by the Oak Harbor School Board, an invasion of student privacy.
The Washington State School Director’s Association revised its model policy so that administrators could only inspect cell phones if they had reasonable suspicions that a student was using his or her phone to violate school policy, HeraldNet reports.
Students are prohibited from using cell phones to disrupt class by bullying, harassing or threatening other students. Sending or viewing sexually explicit photos, text messages and emails on school grounds is also unacceptable.
