School security officers in Detroit returned to the city’s schools Jan.13 after being laid off earlier in the month.
The officers at many of Detroit Public Schools’ elementary and middle schools were laid off as a result of persistent budget restrictions, according to wxyz.com.
But the firings led to criticism from parent groups and teachers who argued the officers were necessary to maintain school security. The schools that lost their security officers received no alternative security upgrades or modified emergency plans.
