The Des Moines School District currently has more than 700 security cameras on its campuses, and that number will continue to rise.
Over the past five years, the district has quadrupled the number of security cameras, allowing security personnel to watch a giant video network connected to all 58 schools, reports KCCI News 8.
While there are no plans to install cameras in classrooms, the district hopes to have cameras in all common areas in the near future. The new cameras are much smaller than the units previously installed.
Although the number of units installed could soon be close to 1,000, technology has enabled the district to install cameras more efficiently. For example, instead of installing four cameras in hallways that intersect, the district can now only use one, claims the district’s director of facilities, Jamie Wilkerson.
The cameras were used last summer by security personnel to catch children who broke into an elementary school.
