A spike in reports of on-campus sex offenses after the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal in 2011 has prompted the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR) to investigate whether Penn State properly handled this issue prior to Sandusky’s arrest. OCR will conduct a review to determine if the school complied with Title IX prior to November 2011.
In 2012, the university received 56 reports of on-campus sex offenses, reports the Centre Daily Times. That’s more than double the 24 reports made in 2011 and 14 times the number reported in 2010, when just four cases were charted.
OCR’s Philadelphia office will conduct the review.
Last spring, Penn State Integrity Monitor Sen. George Mitchell commended the university on its progress to comply with Clery Act requirements, as well as its efforts to alert the campus community about child sexual abuse.
