A forensic patient was killed after taking a nurse hostage inside Delnor Hospital in greater Chicago Saturday afternoon.

Tywon Salters was killed by a SWAT team in a Delnor Hospital emergency room following negotiations with police, reports CNN.

Salters, 22, was being treated around 12:30 p.m. local time when he grabbed a Kane County Jail correctional officer’s pistol. Salters then took a nurse into a nearby emergency room.

The area was evacuated and negotiators talked with Salters for several hours in hopes of getting him to turn himself in.

Kane County Sheriff’s Department Spokesman Patrick Gengler said at some point around 5 p.m. those talks “broke down” and the SWAT team entered the emergency room.

Salters was shot to death in the encounter and no other injuries were reported.

“All of the patients are secure and safe,” Delnor Hospital spokeswoman Kimberly Waterman said. “We were able to move patients out of the ER. Those that needed medical care were transferred to other hospitals.”

Salters had been at the hospital since May 8 following his arrest for possession of a stolen vehicle and had undergone surgery at the hospital.

Illinois state police are investigating the incident, including the SWAT team members’ use of force.
