Dartmouth College has banned hard alcohol and implemented a sexual violence prevention program that students must participate in every year they are enrolled at the college.
Dartmouth’s new policy follows a hard liquor ban at several other colleges including Colby, Bates and Bowdoin, but officials said it will be the first Ivy League institution to implement such a measure. It will also be the first college – not including military academies – to require sexual violence prevention education for four years, WMUR 9 reports.
The new measures were presented Jan. 29 by Dartmouth President Philip Hanlon. They are the product of the “Moving Dartmouth Forward” steering committee formed in April to examine problems on campus such as high-risk drinking and sexual assault.
Dartmouth is one of 95 schools currently under federal investigation for its handling of sexual harassment and violence.
