HANOVER, N.H. — After experiencing a notable increase in the reporting of hazing allegations, Dartmouth College has made changes to its hazing policy, including random walk-throughs of Greek housing and dormitories.
The Ivy League school was prompted to crack down on hazing after a former fraternity member alleged that he was pressured to consume vomit during his hazing process, the Associated Press reports.
In addition to the unplanned walk-throughs, the policy also offers limited immunity to individual students who report hazing activity. Those students will not face disciplinary sanctions — even if they took part in hazing — if the conduct did not cause harm. Other policies include a “fresh start” amnesty program for fraternities, athletic teams or other groups that disclose hazing behavior. These groups will get help developing a plan to stop the hazing.
In both cases, individuals and group still could be subject to criminal and civil penalties.
