CUNY Officer Killed in Apartment Explosion

NEW YORK – An officer with the City University of New York’s Public Safety Department was killed last week when a gas explosion leveled an apartment building in East Harlem.

Sgt. Griselde Camacho, 44, was one of eight people who were killed in the explosion. She was an officer at Hunter College, POLICE Magazine reports.

In 2010, Camacho was named by her union as the Peace Officer of the Year, Newsday reports.

“Our hearts go out to Griselde’s family at this terrible time,” Hunter College President Jennifer J. Raab said in the statement. “We know this is a difficult time for all those who knew and worked with Sergeant Camacho, whether at the Silberman School or as part of the public safety office.”

Friends and colleagues have set up a memorial page for Camacho on Facebook.
