A fraternity at the University of Colorado found a unique way to honor the school’s public safety department last week.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon was looking for a way to give thanks to the department after a campus police officer was killed in the Nov. 27 shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic.
In that incident, Officer Garrett Swasey, 44, was working for the university when he was called to assist in an active shooter incident where an officer was under fire. The clinic is roughly ten minutes from the university’s campus.
Because members of the fraternity were close with Swasey, they arranged to have an American flag flown over the Capitol in Washington, D.C., in his honor.
On Jan. 29, the fraternity presented the flag with a certificate to university Chief of Police Brian McPike at a special ceremony, according to gazette.com.
The flag will be placed in the department’s office in an encased shadow box in memory of Swasey.
The ceremony was just the latest gesture of goodwill after several groups held fundraisers to benefit Swasey’s family and the department.
Swasey leaves behind a wife and two children.
