After agreeing to participate in anti-hazing training and change their initiation practices, Coastal Carolina University officials removed the suspensions against Pi Kappa Phi and Kappa Sigma after school officials deemed the charges minor. The national organization cancelled the local chapter of Kappa Epsilon, which was also suspended, and they will not be back on campus.
The fraternities that have had their suspensions lifted will be on probation for the semester and not allowed to serve alcohol at events they host at the South Carolina school, according to Myrtle Beach Online.
Debbie Conner, Coastal’s vice president for student affairs, says charges were hazing with a small “h” and not hazing with a large “H.” The school investigated the charges that the pledges were serving as “man servants” to the fraternities, picking up food and cleaning up. There were also reports of running and working out as part of the pledging.
“I would say everything across the board was a little h,” she said in the article. “The physical activity is on the edge, but … I’ve seen hazing cases where physical activity is a big H and this was not.”
