Campus Officers Could Have Prevented Suicide, Suit Claims

DAYTON, Ohio — The parents of a Wright State University student who committed suicide in 2008 have filed a lawsuit against the school, claiming that campus police could have prevented the student’s death.

Michael and Lisa Conner said their son Nathan’s roommates alerted campus police when Nathan threatened to kill himself, The Associated Press reports. Officers responded but concluded that Nathan wasn’t suicidal, according to court documents.

The lawsuit also claims that two officers who responded had been present when Nathan overdosed on medication two months earlier in an attempt to take his own life. The officers did not notify the campus wellness center as required by university policy, the lawyer representing the Conners said.
