SACRAMENTO—The California State Assembly is considering a bill that would allow prosecutors to charge the parents of truant students with misdemeanors.
Under SB 1317, which is sponsored by Sen. Mark Leno, parents could be jailed for up to a year and fined $2,000 if their children are chronically absent from school. The bill would apply to parents of students in the first through eighth grades.
To encourage parents to get their children to school, a judge could postpone the punishment.
The bill has already been passed by the State Senate.
