Calif. District Faces Lawsuit for Allegedly Firing Teacher for Being a Lesbian

HESPERIA, Calif. — A former Sultana High School teacher has filed a lawsuit against the Hesperia Unified School District claiming that she was fired for being a lesbian.

Julia Frost taught for the district for two years before her termination. In the filing, Frost alleges that Sultana High School created a hostile environment for her and other lesbian, gay or gender non-conforming individuals.

Additionally, Frost, who served as the faculty sponsor of the Gay-Straight Alliance, believes she was removed from her position because she taught students how to make formal complaints regarding criticism and open hostility directed at students, the Los Angeles Times reports.

HUSD officials have dismissed the allegations as false.
