TORONTO — An arrest has been made in connection to an attack on a woman inside a York University campus building that occurred on Saturday. The attack has raised concerns about the level of security on the campus.
The victim was walking on campus when she noticed she was being followed, the CityNews reports. She entered the Seneca College building and a man attacked her in the building’s main hall. When she tried to escape him by entering an office, the man attacked her again.
The man lives on the campus but is not a student. Police first became aware of the suspect when two other women reported they had been followed. No charges were filed at that time.
The attack, which took place at 4 p.m. on May 5, was captured by video surveillance, the Globe and Mail reports. University officials announced last month that security patrols had been increased after the murder of a student was witnessed by her boyfriend via webcam.
The university has invested about $9 million in safety and security this year. An audit conducted at the university two years ago found that more than a third of York students felt “unsafe” or “very unsafe” on campus.
