COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The U.S. Air Force Academy was forced to evacuate about 550 cadets from its campus in the wake of the Waldo Canyon Fire, which has destroyed hundreds of homes.
As of Wednesday, no campus buildings were threatened by the fire, the Disaster News Network reports. Before evacuating the cadets, the academy ordered the evacuation of several housing areas “as a health and safety precaution resulting from the unpredictability of the fire.”
About 200 summer academics cadets were moved to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, and the other 350 cadets who were participating in training programs were released to their local sponsor families, Inside Higher Ed reports. In-processing for cadets from the class of 2016 began as scheduled on Thursday, but all other base operations are canceled.
