RALEIGH, N.C. — Following University of North Carolina (UNC) System President Tom Ross’ opposition to a Senate bill that would allow concealed handguns on campus, gun rights advocates have launched a media campaign highlighting recent crimes on UNC college campuses. With its radio ad, the advocacy group, Grass Roots North Carolina, claims that if students had been armed, many campus crimes would not have taken place.
Under current laws, concealed handgun permit holders cannot bring their weapons on college campuses. However, House Bill 937, which is currently in the Senate, would allow permit holders to keep guns in locked cars on college campuses, WNCN.com reports.
For his part, Ross supports the opinions of all UNC chiefs of police, who believe that allowing guns on campus would increase the risk to public safety.
