MADISON, Wis. — Illegal use of the prescription drug Adderall is becoming increasing popular and more accepted by the student body at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Despite the risk of addiction and overdose, law enforcement and university officials have not made it a priority to locate or punish Adderall abusers.
Adderall is intended to treat children and adults suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). College students often use the drug to focus while studying or taking exams, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. Users can become psychologically addicted or suffer from symptoms such as sleep disruption and headaches.
A study published in 2005 found that 44 percent of students knew someone who used substances such as Adderall, and that four in 10 students with a prescription had abused it at some point. Experts believe this trend continues.
