Women who have been raped or subjected to other types of abuse have higher rates of mental disorders and are 20 times more likely to attempt suicide, according to an Australian study.
The study looked at four common types of abuse, including physical violence by an intimate partner, rape, other sexual assault and stalking, AFP reports. The study found that the lifetime rate of mental disorders among women who had experienced two types of this violence was 69 percent; for three or more types it was 89.4 percent.
Women who had never been exposed to gender-based violence had a 1.6 percent attempted suicide rate, while women who had experienced one type had a 6 percent rate. Those participants who experienced three or four types had a 34 percent rate of attempted suicide.
