STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Four months after computer equipment was stolen from Staten Island University Hospital containing personal information of about 88,000 patients, hospital administrators are sending letters informing patients of the breach.
Names, Social Security Numbers and health insurance numbers were stored in computer files on a desktop computer, as well as on a back-up hard drive. That information was stolen on Dec. 29 from one of the finance offices at the hospital.
The suspect, described as an African American male between 30 and 40 years of age, was caught on surveillance footage. He was seen carrying the computer equipment in a cardboard box. Officials for the hospital do not believe it was an inside job, and no arrests have been made.
