6 New Title IX Positions Announced at the Univ. of Maryland

The announcement comes after the school’s student government approved a $39 annual student fee.

The University of Maryland opened up funds for six new positions that will deal with sexual misconduct on campus.

The positons, announced Tuesday, will work in the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct and the CARE to Stop Violence office.

The positions include a deputy director, a standing review committee coordinator and two sexual misconduct investigators in the OCRSM and two other positions that will improve counseling and outreach efforts related to sexual misconduct.

The announcement came a month after the school’s Student Government Association voted 32-1 to approve a $34 annual fee for students to assist with dealing with sexual misconduct.

“The university supports the advocacy efforts of the SGA on these issues,” university spokesperson Crystal Brown told The Diamondback. “We have the same goal: to properly fund the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct and ensure that the necessary resources are provided to execute the important work of this office.”

The school currently spends more than $2 million annually on sexual assault prevention and investigations. Over half of that total goes to the Title IX office, where Title IX Director Catherine Carroll has complained about having too few resources and being understaffed.

The student fee must be approved by university President Wallace Loh and the university system’s Board of Regents before it is implemented.
