ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children released a list of all documented cases of newborn and infant abductions by non-family members from U.S. hospitals, homes or other areas. The list covers cases from 1983 to 2010.
Of the 271 reported cases of infant (ages zero to six months) abduction listed, 12 of those are still unsolved. Forty seven percent of the incidents occurred in hospital facilities. The majority of those infants (58 percent) were taken from their mother’s hospital room.
In 108 instances, infants were abducted from homes. Of those, there were 32 cases of violence against the mother of the infant. Thirty-five abductions occurred in places other than a home or hospital.
