A massive explosion at a high school building in New York sent three people to the hospital, one of whom is in critical condition.
Luigi Barillaro, 36, reportedly lit a match to check a gas leak on August 20, causing the explosion that left him in critical condition and two of his coworkers in the hospital with less severe injuries.
The workers were part of a plumbing company that was working on the sixth floor of a Manhattan building that houses eight small high schools, according to the New York Post.
The explosion was so large that windows and walls of the building were blown out and nearby residents mistook it for an earthquake.
The building’s high schools serve around 3,000 students, but school was not scheduled to start until September 9. Delays are expected.
