CHICAGO —The number of Chicago Public Schools students shot this past school year was 319 — a 22% increase from the previous school year and the highest number in four years.
The increase in shootings comes at a time of rising concerns about the city’s homicide rate, the Chicago Tribune reports. Through June 17, homicides are up by 38% this year compared with the same period in 2011, with shootings up 12%.
However, the number of students killed in gun violence this past school year dipped slightly to 24.
