BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —The suspect in the shooting deaths of three men at an apartment building near Auburn University surrendered to police Tuesday.
Desmonte Leonard turned himself in in Montgomery, Ala., Reuters reports. Earlier Tuesday, authorities doubled the reward for information leading to Leonard’s capture to $30,000.
Leonard allegedly opened fire at an off-campus apartment complex during a fight over a woman, The Boston Globe reports. Edward Christian, who had not been playing because of a back injury, Ladarious Phillips, who had previously quit playing football, and 20-year-old Demario Pitts were all killed. One of the wounded was a current football player, Eric Mack.
Turquorius Vines, 23, said he and his friends were approached by two other men and started arguing, Bay News 9 reports. Vines punched one of the men while his friend hit both of the men with a bottle. Either one or both of the men started shooting, Vines said.
Leonard was seen with two other individuals in a white Chevy Caprice shortly after the shooting, Oanow.com reports. He is being charged with three counts of capital murder.
