Lawyers say two former students facing charges after a hazing scandal involving a New Jersey high school football team have been cleared of the most serious charges.
The former Sayreville War Memorial High School football players were found not guilty on August 7 on conspiracy to commit aggravated sexual contact, aggravated sexual contact and aggravated assault, according to nbcnewyork.com. They were found guilty of crimes that carry much lesser penalties.
The other former players involved in the scandal have mainly been sentenced to community service.
Allegations spread of hazing when witnesses says several varsity players entered an underclassmen locker room in September 2014 and held players down while others hit and groped them. There were three more alleged incidents of hazing that took place within a ten day stretch.
The scandal led to the arrest of seven students, suspensions for the coaching staff and the cancellation of the football season.
