CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – A gunman opened fire Friday on a satellite campus of the New River Community College (NRCC), wounding two women. The suspect was apprehended by an off-duty security guard and two police officers about five minutes after the incident started.

NRCC student Neil Allan MacInnis, 18, has been charged with malicious wounding and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, reports the Roanoke Times.

The shootings occurred Friday, just before 2 p.m., in a converted movie theater at the New River Valley Mall, prompting mall patrons to scramble to safety. Police say MacInnis drove to the mall and opened fire on Taylor Sharpe and Kristina Bousserghine. A bystander walking into the mall noticed the suspect was carrying a weapon and called 9-1-1 just as the shooting began, reports ABC News. The mall’s general manager’s quick response is believed to have prevented further bloodshed.

Classes have been cancelled through Tuesday.
