The NYPD officer gunned down by a violent ex-con in Brooklyn Monday became the 166th police officer killed in the line of duty this year, a 14% jump from 2010, according to a national law enforcement group.
Shooting deaths, in particular, are on the rise, according to numbers provided by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, the New York Daily News reports.
Of the 166 officers, 62 were shot and killed on duty since December 2010, a 19% jump from last year, NLEOMF said.
