NEW YORK — Authorities have arrested a 14-year-old boy believed to be involved in a tragic school shooting that claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl in the Bronx on Monday. The incident erupted on the grounds of the Bronx Latin School, and the victim was an innocent bystander.
The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. as a group of approximately 20 teenagers gathered in the schoolyard. According to police reports, a fistfight broke out among the teens. During the altercation, someone handed a firearm to the 14-year-old suspect, reports Fox5NY.

The suspect then fired three shots, missing his intended target but striking Evette Jeffrey, 16, in the head, reports NBC New York. Jeffrey, who had been riding her scooter near the scene at the time of the shooting, was rushed to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to her injuries.
Evette, who was not a student at the Bronx Latin School, was reportedly visiting her boyfriend, who attends the school. The alleged shooter is also not enrolled at the school.
