14 Pennsylvania Universities Ban Smoking on Campus

Published: September 16, 2008

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Students at 14 Pennsylvania state-owned universities are outraged with a new policy that prohibits smoking on campus, including outdoors. Students received word that the ban would take place on Sept. 10, one day before the ban took place.

Those who oppose the new policy have organized peaceful protests, which include smokers and some non-smokers, on at least three of the 14 Pennsylvania campuses.

For their part, campus police have issued warning cards to students, stating that should a student get caught smoking on campus he or she could face fines or disciplinary action. Furthermore, the cards inform students that the university health center is available for help quitting smoking.

Health officials are relying on the public to report violators.
