NEW YORK — Twelve people filed a lawsuit Tuesday against North Shore University Hospital, following a security breach where medical records with personal information were stolen.
The plaintiffs claim that for the past two years, medical record face sheets with full names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medical histories and other information were stolen from the hospital, CBS New York reports. The lawsuit further accuses the hospital of knowing about a theft ring that resulted from the breach for more than a year, but failed to notify patients promptly.
Many plaintiffs said they suffered identity theft because of the hospital’s negligence. One victim cited receiving a letter stating a fraudulent tax return was filed with her Social Security number. Fraudulent credit cards and cell phone accounts were opened in other plaintiffs’ names. Two suspects — Clincy Robinson and Dennis Messias — were arrested for their involvement last year.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, as well as the creation of a fund for comprehensive credit monitoring and identity theft protection.
