Spiked Drinks Send 12 Freshmen to the Hospital

Published: October 10, 2010

ROSALYN, Wash. — Twelve Central Washington University (CWU) freshmen — mostly women — may have been targeted as part of an orchestrated sexual assault at off-campus house party.

The victims were hospitalized after someone allegedly spiked the drinks with an unknown substance at the Oct. 8 event, ABC News reports. Police were directed to the house party after responding to a call at a grocery store where someone was suffering from an overdose. Authorities were then directed to the house party where they discovered 11 unconscious or semi-conscious people, according to KNDO.com.

Partygoers said the victims were dry-heaving and coughing as a result of the overdose. Because the victims only had one or two drinks, it was not the victims’ intent to get high or unconscious, police said.

Blood samples were taken from each victim and will be tested for flunitrazepam (“roofies”) and Ecstasy. Though officials are still investigating what drug was used to spike the drinks, police believe the date-rape drug was the cause of the overdoses, reports Gather.com. Police did not find any drugs at the home during their search.

CWU students who attended the party will likely face discipline ranging from alcohol counseling to expulsion, according to MyNorthwest.com. As many as 50 CWU students attended the bash, but most ran away when police broke up the party.

All of the victims have been released from the hospital.
