A new survey shows that almost one in nine high school seniors have used synthetic drugs to get high in the past year.
Drugs such as “K2” or “Spice” are sold in convenience stores and mimic the effects of marijuana, USA Today reports. The survey, from Monitoring the Future, found that 11.4% of the seniors had used the substances, which are packaged as potpourri or herbal incense.
A bill passed this month in Iowa bans 16 synthetic compounds that mimic marijuana and 15 synthetic hallucinogens. The legislation comes after a teen shot himself while on K2 in July 2010.
