Patient Privacy Considerations
Improving transparency and officer accountability is just as important in hospitals as it is elsewhere, but unlike at universities, hospitals can’t just equip their officers with body-worn cameras that record indiscriminately.
Officers in hospitals, especially when they’re dealing with information relating to patients, must always be sure to follow privacy rules. For reference, Campus Safety has published stories from experts on the nuances of body-worn cameras at hospitals (here and here).
While it might be commonplace for traditional police officers to look up someone’s information, the same act has opened hospitals up to potential fines from HIPAA violations. Patient privacy considerations should always be in the back of ho
spital security officers’ minds.
