BINGHAMTON, N.Y.Genetec Inc., a provider of security, public safety, operations, and business intelligence solutions, announced Binghamton University, a nationally recognized research institution and one of the four university centers of the State University of New York system (SUNY), has implemented the Genetec™ Security Center platform to unify its security systems, streamline operations, and better support the safety of its expanding campus community.

Binghamton University’s fragmented legacy tech stack used to consist of separate video management and access control systems, with no ability to communicate between them, according to the company. Intrusion detection, panic buttons, and mass notification systems were also siloed and disconnected. As a result, the university’s IT and security teams struggled with disconnected data, security gaps, and time-consuming manual workarounds.

Binghamton ultimately chose the Genetec Security Center platform, including Synergis™ (access control), Omnicast™ (video management), AutoVu™ (automatic license plate recognition (ALPR)), Sipelia™ (intercom), and Genetec Clearance™ (digital evidence management), to centralize its security operations. With more than 4,800 access control readers and 1,635 surveillance cameras now integrated into a single interface, the university has seen immediate improvements in both efficiency and incident response.

“We’re managing thousands of cameras and readers across 120 buildings—and we do it with a nine-person team,” said Dave Martin, assistant director of security infrastructure and support at Binghamton. “That kind of scale is only possible because of the platform we’ve built with Genetec.”

Genetec Security Center Features

Genetec’s Security Center platform has privacy-by-design features, including dynamic masking, strong cybersecurity measures, and data access restrictions, allowing the university to protect sensitive information.

Video analytics also help operators proactively address developing situations. For instance, when large groups gather unexpectedly, operators are notified so they can assess the situation and respond accordingly.

Two campus Security Operations Centers now provide centralized monitoring, while more than 160 users in different departments can remotely access the information they need.

“Genetec was the solution we wanted,” said Martin. “Genetec was tier one, and everything else was a tier below.”

The university will continue evolving its access control strategy, says Genetec, transitioning to mobile credentials and replacing nearly 3,000 dorm room locks with Wi-Fi enabled and mobile-ready readers.
