Spotlight on: Campus Safety Conference

The Campus Safety Conference is a 2-day intense conference for administrators and public safety officials, security and law enforcement executives from all over the country looking for solutions to campus safety, security, emergency management and technology challenges.

Longtime NH Campus Safety Director Moving On

The former Keene State College director will become the assistant vice president of public safety at La Salle University.

Amanda Guthorn, who’s been the director of campus safety at Keene State College for 15 years, will begin a new role with La Salle University in Philadelphia in the spring semester.

Guthorn’s accomplishments at the Keene, New Hampshire college include upgrading video surveillance systems, developing a new Memorandum of Understanding with local police to prevent sexual assault and working to restore the bond between community and campus following the 2014 Pumpkinfest riots.

Guthorn has also skillfully leveraged evolving technologies to keep her department ahead of the curve on things like social media and mobile communication.

The former director says she always took a positive approach to dealing with troubled youth and stayed optimistic when others may have gotten discouraged.

“You have to hope that there are opportunities for people to change their lives,” Guthorn told the Sentinel Source.

Now Guthorn will assume the role of assistant vice president of public safety at La Salle University, which is closer to her family in her home state of New Jersey.

Guthorn says she plans to continue showing people the human side of law enforcement in an effort to strengthen community relationships.

“People are either fearful or resentful of people in uniform because they don’t know them,” Guthorn says. “So if you can break down that boundary a little bit, I think that works really well.”
