Hosting Alcohol-Free Events May Curb College Binge Drinking

According to several surveys, college binge drinking is decreasing. College officials attribute this to the growing number of alcohol-free events being offered on campuses.

Surveys conducted at Purdue University show that binge drinking dropped from 48 percent in 2006 to 37.3 percent in 2009, The Wall Street Journal reports. Students at Purdue have introduced non-alcohol-related activities, such as “Thursday Night at the Theater,” a free movie screening.   

Brandon Busteed, chief executive of an organization called Outside the Classroom, told the news source that 100 colleges and universities in the country provide excellent alcohol-free activities on campus. Some of them, he said, are started by students while others are introduced by administrators.

In a survey of 500,000 college freshman, Outside the Classroom found that the most popular alcohol-free activities among students are movie screenings, live music or just having a place to socialize.
