Chicago School Employee Fatally Shot Outside of Campus

The attack happened outside of Robert McNair Elementary School while students and parents were inside the school.

Chicago Public Schools employee Denzel Thornton, 25, was shot and killed Thursday outside of Robert McNair Elementary School while students and parents were inside the school.

Thornton worked as a compliance specialist for nutrition services and had been working at Robert McNair that afternoon, reports NBC Chicago. He was killed when someone shot him in the head.

The campus was locked down briefly, although authorities say the school, students and staff were not targeted. They also say that Thornton had no criminal history or any ties to gangs.

Families of students who attend the school received an automated call informing them of the shooting and informing them that the crisis support team would be on campus the following day. The eighth grade graduation, which was scheduled for later that same day, took place as scheduled.

No suspects have been apprehended in the case, and police are still investigating.
