Safety Planning for Extracurricular Activities in K12 Schools
This webinar is designed to help K12 teachers, coaches, and administrators plan for safety during extracurricular activities. While most schools have focused significant effort and resources on planning for emergencies during the normal school day, many still have work to do in order to handle incidents that might arise during activities outside of the normal school day, such as at an athletic event, orchestra concert, after school practice, travel to an out-of-town event, etc. The discussion will include:
- Differences and similarities between normal school safety plans and extracurricular safety plans
- Common emergencies that can impact extracurricular activities
- How and when to engage students in the safety planning and implementation process

Meet Our Presenter
Stephen Lopez
Chief of Police, New Mexico State University
Chief Stephen Lopez has been in campus law enforcement for 28 years, and is currently the Chief of Police for the New Mexico State University system. He has also been adjunct faculty for 15 years teaching courses in criminal investigations and public health, and holds numerous law enforcement instructor certifications. He has bachelor degrees in criminal justice and psychology, and a masters in strategic planning for critical infrastructures. He has taught at regional and national conferences and workshops in areas including integrating training in use of force, active shooter response, and select fire weapons for patrol. He is a regular facilitator and evaluator in tabletop, functional, and full scale exercises.
