Adelphi U. Gets IP Video Education

Long Island’s oldest liberal arts college phases out its DVRs and adopts an IP video system that runs on the campus’ network.

“Being able to combine a large number of cameras on one large monitor, as opposed to smaller images on multiple monitors as with older systems, makes it faster and easier to zero-in on any area covered by the system using just a couple of mouse clicks,” adds Hughes. “We have found this system much easier to manage than our DVR systems. Archiving is taken care of automatically, and it also requires a much smaller footprint for the head-end.”

When it was determined some analog cameras would also be needed for the project, Adelphi opted for Pelco Spectra IV PTZ domes. These units were deployed in the parking structure, which is topped by a stadium-sized lacrosse/soccer field. Idesco used a Nitek hub to run unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cable to the cameras and Axis IP encoders to integrate them into the OnSSI system.

The system relies on Pivot3’s Raige storage array to retain up to 12TB of video data. Among the other components included in the total package were Bosch Security Systems license plate capture cameras and Honeywell indoor/outdoor mini domes.

Because Adelphi’s new video surveillance solution runs on the campus network, one of the most important facets of the job was making sure the university’s IT personnel understood the IP security solution, and that it would have no negative impact on Adelphi’s network. The integrator, however, was able to demonstrate the new system’s flexibility and manageability to live within the constraints of a busy academic network.

Another concern for the school’s IT department was ongoing maintenance and support. Adelphi prefers to have someone else supply, install and manage its servers, clients and network equipment – if they trust that provider’s capabilities. Idesco was chosen for this task because it had already established a successful track record working with its customers’ network managers.

School Salutes System, Integrator
Although the installation was complete, Adelphi security personnel still needed to be trained how to use the new system. As fate would have it, however, an unplanned incident served to expedite the process. “Prior to our planned formal training, we had a medical emergency and our public safety officers were able to use this system to monitor the situation, direct first responders to the right location more quickly and save the events on permanent storage media,” says Palma. “Our staff managed, in only a few days after the system was first turned up, to teach themselves most of what they needed to know.”

Still, Idesco did conduct formal training that – thanks to being able to utilize one of Adelphi’s computer labs – accommodated more participants and had fewer distractions than would ordinarily be the case. The integrator was able to train 10 public safety officers at a time without being confined in a crowded control center.

With all the campus’ security staff up to speed and the system fully operational, Adelphi is delighted with its new IP video system. Specific points of satisfaction include the clarity of surveillance images and how well the license plate capture works. Adelphi is equally enamored with Idesco and the relationship it has forged with integrator.

Adelphi’s only complaint was out of the integrator’s control – the obsolescent nature of electronic- and computer-based devices today. Although this is becoming less problematic as security manufacturers provide products that are more flexible and scalable via software upgrades, it remains a concern. Fortunately, as these technological advances become viable, the university’s needs or interests change, or its present system requires maintenance or servicing, it can count on Idesco to deliver answers and support – a role the integrator has already begun to fulfill.

Campus at a Glance

Campus: Adelphi University is a liberal arts college located in Long Island, N.Y. It enrolls more than 8,500 students and has more than 900 full- and part-time faculty members.

Problem: The campus needed a system that  could combine all cameras into central storage over the existing network infrastructure.

Solution: An IP video solution, which included cameras and other equipment from Axis, Bosch, Honeywell, Nitek, Pelco, Pivot3 and OnSSI.

Results: The ability to more easily and more quickly zero in on areas of concern. Searching for events is much easier, and events are archived automatically.
