The doctor worked at UM from the 1960s through 2003, and the school has sent letters out to more than 300,000 former students seeking information on the investigation of the abuse allegations.
The newly unsealed complaint includes testimony by several Ohio State University employees who said the school knew for years about the sexual abuse allegations against OSU’s former team doctor.
The payouts to the claimants represent about half of the former OSU students who say they were victimized by Richard Strauss.
The new regulations require colleges to allow cross-examination of accusers and eliminate the single-investigator models.
The agency also says school closings due to COVID-19 and children’s increased online presence pose an increased risk for child exploitation.
The settlement funds will be distributed by an independent special master who is trained in sex abuse trauma.
Following an investigation, the school has agreed to create a centralized record-keeping system to track sexual misconduct allegations against employees.
