5. Campus Police Undergo Different Training

Although training procedures differ from school to school and state to state, it’s important to understand that campus police training may not focus on certain kinds of policing, such as traffic stops, as much as traditional law enforcement departments. Campus police training may also emphasize cultural diversity and sensitivity more than traditional police. If campus police are nonsworn or unarmed, they might receive more training on non-lethal force procedures or de-escalation techniques. Other types of training provided to campus police that aren’t, offered to traditional police include Clery, Title IX, HIPAA and FERPA compliance.
