AUSTIN, Texas— Eagle Eye Networks today introduced Eagle Eye Gun Detection, a new security layer for schools, institutions of higher education and communities that works with existing security cameras to proactively detect firearms.

With gun violence now the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States, Eagle Eye Gun Detection offers a critical tool for prevention and protection, according to the company’s press release. The AI-powered system transforms existing security cameras from passive recording devices into an active gun detection system. Early detection provides campuses and other types of organizations with valuable time to take action and potentially save lives during an active shooter situation.

Eagle Eye Triple-Layer Verification Reduces False Positives

Eagle Eye Gun Detection analyzes video streams to identify brandished guns. To ensure the highest level of accuracy, Eagle Eye has engineered a Triple-Layer Verification system:

  1. Rapid Edge AI: On-site video is continuously analyzed for potential threats.
  2. Advanced Cloud AI: If a potential gun is detected, the video is sent to the Eagle Eye Cloud for analysis by a more powerful AI model to confirm the threat and reduce false alarms.
  3. Human Review Service: When the Cloud AI detects a firearm, trained professionals verify the gun’s presence before executing the school’s emergency response notifications.

This system works in conjunction with Eagle Eye 911 Camera Sharing, which can provide 911 operators and first responders with secure access to live video feeds during an emergency, improving situational awareness and response time.

School leaders who have adopted the technology emphasize its importance as an unobtrusive yet vital security measure.

“We want kids to be able to be kids. And students and faculty should be able to focus on learning without having to be distracted by security,” said Matthew Schwandt, Director of Operations at Valor School in Austin. “Eagle Eye Gun Detection is an additional defensive layer to speed up response and mitigate and prevent a potentially dangerous situation before it escalates.”

H.E. Jenkins, Chief of Police at St. Thomas University in Houston, added, “Gun detection that is AI-powered, triple-verified, camera agnostic, and able to work in tandem with other security systems is a game-changer. It’s a layered approach to security, and I think it is what every university should be doing.”

While no single technology can solve gun violence, a multi-layered approach that includes visual gun detection, access control, staff training, and other physical barriers provides optimal protection. Eagle Eye Gun Detection adds a crucial new layer to this comprehensive safety strategy.
