NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Security officers at Yale University are crying foul over new deployment policies, claiming that school officials are trying to penalize the force for unionizing.
In November 2010, Yale Security voted to unionize, citing concerns for job security and alleged departmental mismanagement, despite heavy opposition from university administrators, reports Yale Daily News. The following year, the International Union of Security Police and Fire Professions of America (SPFPA), which represents 140 Yale security officers, reached a formal contract agreement with the university.
Since then, sources close to the security force claim that the unarmed officers’ contracts have been breached. They also allege that administrators have placed the force in high crime areas without any training in self-defense. Yale University officials have denied any claims of retaliation.
