NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale’s College Council has proposed an overhaul of the university’s sexual assault reporting and response policies.
The resolution calls for the creation of an official advocacy position that would provide sexual assault victims with emotional, medical and legal support. Other proposed provisions include a formal board to increase awareness of sexual assault and a consistent and centralized reporting system that would more accurately document incidents.
The resolution passed with 23 votes in favor and one abstention.
Currently, there are several free counseling programs as well as a grievance board to deal with sexual assault cases. There is concern, however, that this system is too decentralized.
