MACOMB, Ill. – Officials at Western Illinois University (WIU) have revealed that the personal information of more than 200,000 people may have been exposed during a recent computer security breach.
The system affected contained student names, addresses and Social Security numbers. Bookstore and student union hotel customer credit card information may have also been exposed.
Officials say this breach in security was closed promptly after it was detected and say they do not believe the system’s records were copied. However, WIU recommends that prudent steps be taken by all individuals potentially impacted by the breach to protect themselves from possible identity theft or other security related issues.
As many as 240,000 individuals may have been affected. The school will soon send letters to those people affected by the June 5 breach.
