YORK, Pa. – In a move to enhance security, WellSpan Health has announced plans to establish a private police force by summer 2026. This initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes the installation of weapons detection systems across WellSpan facilities, aiming to bolster safety for patients, staff, and visitors.
Key Features of WellSpan’s New Security Initiative
The York-based healthcare provider detailed its plans in a recent announcement, highlighting the creation of a private force of armed officers, which will complement the existing security teams at WellSpan facilities. These officers will focus on handling “less-serious crimes” and ensuring safety during interactions involving patients, visitors, and staff.

The initiative comes on the heels of WellSpan’s substantial investment of over $20 million in security enhancements over the past two years.
William White, who became WellSpan’s vice president of public safety in March 2024, will lead this new department. White, with over 25 years of experience with the Pennsylvania State Police, emphasized that the new force is not intended to replace state and local law enforcement but to provide an additional layer of security.
How Weapons Detection Systems Will Enhance Hospital Safety
In addition to forming the police force, WellSpan plans to implement weapons detection at hospital entrances. This system will screen all entrants, reinforcing the healthcare provider’s commitment to safety.
“The security initiatives we’ve already launched have led to a 55% reduction in workplace violence injuries resulting in time off work,” stated White. “But we know we must do more.”

The private police force will consist of officers with prior law enforcement experience and those who have completed Act 120 basic training certifications through Pennsylvania’s Municipal Police Officers Education and Training Commission. All officers will undergo additional internal training to align with WellSpan’s safety objectives.
Security Changes Follow Fatal UPMC Memorial Hospital Shooting
The decision to enhance security measures comes amid increasing concerns over violence in healthcare settings. Notably, a tragic incident at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York earlier this year highlighted the urgent need for improved safety protocols.
In the February event, a gunman held staff hostage and fatally shot a police officer, underscoring vulnerabilities in hospital security systems.
