Published: December 21, 2006

RICHMOND, Va. – The governor of Virginia announced this week that the state will be giving 24 regions up to $10,000 each in federal grant money to combat the presence of the state’s more than 300 youth gangs.

The federal grant money was awarded to Virginia to help it realize the goals of its prevention-based anti-gang initiative, which was established by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine in June. The state, in turn, will distribute the money to 24 localities.

Among the areas to win grants are Dinwiddie County, Harrisonburg, Petersburg and a regional collection of Emporia and the Brunswick, Greensville, Sussex and Surry counties.
