STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. – A Stafford County Sheriff’s deputy was injured after being attacked while on duty in the lobby of Mary Washington Hospital on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred on March 10, around 12:15 p.m. The deputy, whose identity has not been disclosed, was assisting an individual seeking mental health resources. The deputy escorted the individual to Mary Washington Hospital when the attack took place.
While at the hospital, the deputy encountered Darrell Jackson, 39, a man he recognized from prior interactions, according to a statement from the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say Jackson, who was not involved with the individual receiving mental health care, approached the deputy in the hospital lobby, initiated a confrontation, and then launched into an unprovoked physical attack.
Law Enforcement, Mary Washington Hospital Security and Nursing Staff Subdue Subject
Hospital security personnel, along with nursing staff, quickly intervened. The deputy activated the emergency button on his radio, summoning law enforcement to the scene. Officers from the Fredericksburg Police Department, Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office, and Stafford Sheriff’s Office responded promptly.
With assistance from Mary Washington Hospital security and responding officers, Jackson was subdued and taken into custody. The deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident but did not require hospitalization.

According to law enforcement officials, Jackson has been charged with assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, and obstruction of justice.
Jackson is currently being held at a local jail without bond.
