Violations of Cleary Act Alleged Against Eastern Michigan U.

YPSILANTI, Mich. – A complaint has been filed against Eastern Michigan University (EMU) alleging the university violated the Jeanne Cleary Act in its handling of a late 2006 student murder.

Security On Campus, a Pennsylvania-based campus crime watchdog group, filed papers alleging EMU did not notify students “in a timely manner” of threats to their safety following a student’s murder. The university released an official statement claiming the death of student Laura Dickinson showed no signs of foul play. However, after arresting a murder suspect two months later, police and a medical examiner admitted to immediately suspecting the case was a homicide.

Security On Campus’ complaint also alleges EMU did not accurately report campus crime statistics or outline how it would do so in its annual security report. The Jeanne Clery Act requires all colleges and universities to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses.
