SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A tornado that touched down in several Massachusetts communities on June 1 blew the roofs off of three dormitories at Springfield College and smashed all of the windows in one of the dorms. The campus was closed on June 2 while essential personnel worked to clear roadways and determine the extent of structural damage to the campus.
Senator John Kerry said the areas hit by the storm looked like a “blast zone,” the Associated Press reports. At the MassMutual Center, seniors from Regional High School attending the prom watched the tornado pass by the building’s floor-to-ceiling windows. The building was later converted into an emergency shelter.
An expansive deck on the eighth story of a residence hall at Springfield College disappeared as a result of the tornado, according to the college’s Web site. The campus remains closed today.
Massachusetts has not experienced a tornado since 2008.
